What is a lithograph?
Discovered in 1796, lithography was used for printing around the 1820s. It is a method of printing from the smooth surface of flat limestone. The artist uses a grease pencil to draw the image on the stone. To make the image stable for printing, it is treated with an acid solution. During printing, the stone is kept damp with a sponge and water. When ink is rolled on the stone, the greasy image area picks up the ink and the damp non-image area repels the ink. Paper is placed over the stone and the image is transferred with a press. A separate stone is used for each color. Fine Art hand-pulled lithographs are incredibly labor-intensive and require dedication and concentration on the part of the artist. Each color of ink is hand-rolled a minimum of 16 times per print; likewise the roller requires the same number of rolls on the ink table to be recharged. To reuse the stone, the old image is ground off with grit and water. Lithographs can also be printed off metal plates, special for this purpose.
