What is the difference between a hand-pulled edition print and a reproduction print?
With a reproduction, the original artwork is photographed onto a lithographic plate. It is printed on an offset press like a newspaper is printed. Hundreds of prints can be run in minutes. If you look at the image of a reproduction through a strong magnifying glass, you will see that the image is composed of hundreds of individual dots. You will not see dots if you look at an original Fine Art hand-pulled print.
Another form of reproduction is called giclee. Using computer and printing technology it is possible to reproduce an original art piece so that any dot pattern is unseen.
It is important for you as a buyer to know these differences. Are you acquiring an original piece of art or a reproduction? Either purchase has its place. The important thing is knowing.
