What is a woodcut?
Woodcut is the oldest form of printmaking, dating from around 700 A.D. The artist carves away the surface of the wood block so that only the image desired is left in relief. Ink is rolled on the raised image, paper is placed on the wood and the image is transferred to it by applying pressure (with a press or by hand rubbing). Additional colors and parts of the design require multiple blocks or further carving of the first block. Denice uses pine, often incorporating the knots in her designs. Another favorite is plywood with its swirling wood grain. Linocut is a similar process using linoleum rather than wood.
