What is an Oil Painting?
Oil painters have several options today in using oil as a painting medium. Oil paints that need turpentine for clean-up have been the traditional way to paint. Recently, oil paints that clean up with water have been on the market and they have made it possible for many to paint that could not because of allergies to turpentine and paint thinner. For teaching purposes, Denice has turned to the water miscible paints - although for her personal work, she still finds using the traditional oils her favorite. She uses stretched canvas for most of her work, but surfaces such as gesso prepared paper, board or wood can be used. Oil paintings are usually framed. However, a favorite of Denice's is using deep museum canvas. The canvs is stapled on the back instead of the edges allowing the image to continue around the edge of the piece. This eliminates the need for a frame.
